THIS SPRING OHIO UNIVERsity Ohio University, main campus at Athens; state supported; coeducational; chartered 1804, opened 1809 as the first college in the Old Northwest. There are additional campuses at Chiillicothe, Lancaster, and Zanesville, as well as facilities throughout the state.  joined the not-so-exclusive club of institutions dealing with the aftermath of data breaches. For this school of nearly 17,000 undergraduates, a potentially costly lawsuit got thrown into the mix.

A month after current and former students were notified of the system leaks, alumni Donald Jay Kulpa and Kenneth David Neben flied a class-action suit Noun 1. class-action suit - a lawsuit brought by a representative member of a large group of people on behalf of all members of the group

 in the State of Ohio Court of Claims The Ohio Court of Claims is a court of limited, state-wide jurisdiction. The court's jurisdiction extends to matters in which:
  1. the State of Ohio is a party, and
  2. the state has waived its sovereign immunity by statute.
. Besides seeking judgment that the university's acts and omissions in the wake of the discovery were negligent negligent adj., adv. careless in not fulfilling responsibility. (See: negligence)  and deliberately indifferent to the plaintiffs' constitutional right to privacy, the suit requests "class-wide relief in the form of a court-administered credit monitoring and/or identity monitoring" as well as expenses, should an identity crime occur.

* An institution purchasing a service on behalf of individuals may be able to negotiate a significant discount. The credit bureau Experian's security breach recovery program could provide a discount of up to 80 percent, for example.
