Otis Elevator Company The Otis Elevator Company is the world's largest manufacturer of vertical transportation systems, principally elevators and escalators. Founded in Yonkers, New York, USA in 1853 by Elisha Otis, the company pioneered the development of the safety elevator, which used a special  has been awarded a contract to install the first vertical transportation system in the world-famous Christ the Redeemer Christ the Redeemer (often from Spanish and Portuguese Cristo Redentor) may be a reference to:

Otis is in partnership with the Roberto Marinho Roberto Pisani Marinho (December 3, 1904 – August 6, 2003). Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Marinho was the president and founder of the biggest Brazilian TV channel, Globo. He came under criticism in the documentary Beyond Citizen Kane for his role at Globo.  Foundation, a not-for-profit organization with headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, to provide elevators and escalators to the monument on the summit of Corcovado mountain.

The agreement with the Marinho Foundation calls for Otis to install three of its revolutionary machine-roomless Gen2(TM) elevator systems and four specially configured outdoor escalators.

the company's engineering capabilities and the benefits of the Gen2 elevator system's breakthrough technology.

"The Gen2 system, with its machine-roomless design, is the only vertical transportation solution that meets the rigorous environmental requirements of the prestigious Cristo Redentor project," Page said. "The Marinho Foundation's selection of Otis elevators and escalators is recognition of our company's leadership and pioneering technology in the people-mover industry."

The Otis equipment will provide visitors a long-envisioned vertical transportation route to the summit of Corcovado mountain, where the 70-year-old, 125-foot Christ the Redeemer monument rises over Rio de Janerio, 2,343 feet (710 meters) below. To reach the summit today, most visitors ride a cogwheel train up the mountainside, then climb a flight of steep staircases to the statue and viewpoints of Rio de Janeiro and the Atlantic Ocean Atlantic Ocean [Lat.,=of Atlas], second largest ocean (c.31,800,000 sq mi/82,362,000 sq km; c.36,000,000 sq mi/93,240,000 sq km with marginal seas). . The Gen2 elevators and the escalators will allow visitors to ride to Corcovado's summit, bypassing the staircases.

The elevators, equipped with clear sliding glass doors, will be installed near the train's arrival and departure platform and will carry passengers up 90 feet (30 meters) to a visitors' area. There, Otis high-technology escalators, provided by the company's newly established Otis Escalator escalator

Systems unit, will move riders to the summit.

Both the elevator tower and escalators are designed to follow the contours of the north side of the mountain, with the trees camouflaging the elevator hoistway.

Without the requirement for a machine room, the height of the elevator hoistway is lower than a conventional elevator system, and the hoistway can be concealed among Corcovado's trees. The Gen2 system, the first ever to use flat, polyurethane-coated steel belts to lift the elevator car, was selected over traditional hydraulic-powered elevator technology. The Gen2 system eliminates the use of oil and its permanent magnet (PM) machine technology reduces energy consumption by as much as 40 percent, an especially important benefit in Brazil where the energy crisis has caused power rationing.

The environmental impact of the new equipment on Corcovado Mountain, which is in the middle of the largest urban forest in the world, presented the Roberto Marinho Foundation with challenging technical problems. Silvia Finguerut, general manager of historical and environmental patrimony PATRIMONY. Patrimony is sometimes understood to mean all kinds of property but its more limited signification, includes only such estate, as has descended in the same family and in a still more confined sense, it is only that which has descended or been devised in a direct line from the , said the Foundation studied nearly two dozen arrangements for moving visitors to the summit before selecting the Otis solution.

Ricardo Monte, vice president and senior area executive for Otis' Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies.  Area, said, "The monument is one of the most famous man-made landmarks in the world and we are proud to be involved in its revitalization re·vi·tal·ize

Founded in 1978, the Roberto Marinho Foundation has three priority objectives: education, heritage and ecology. Partnerships, such as the one with Otis for the elevators and escalators, are a hallmark of the foundation.

Fact Sheet

The Gen2(TM) elevator

A set of three Gen2 elevators will be installed on the platform of the tramway terminal. Each elevator has a 2,200-pound (1,000-kilogram) capacity for 13 passengers, a speed of 320 feet per minute (1.60 meters per second), rising two floors. The Gen2 elevator system, which was introduced in 2000 by Otis Elevator Company, is the first elevator to use polyurethane coated steel belts to suspend the elevator cab.

The cabs, supplied by Otis' factory in Gien, France, will have clear glass doors that allow riders a panoramic view of the countryside.

The Gen2 elevator system is the first ever to use flat, coated steel belts to lift the elevator car. The belts are about one-inch wide (30 mm) and only 1/10th of an inch thick (3mm), yet they are stronger, more durable and far more flexible than the heavy woven steel cables that have been the industry standard since the 1800s.

As a result of this technical innovation, Otis said the Gen2 system requires a machine that is only one-quarter the size of traditional technologies, eliminating the need for a separate machine room while providing superior reliability, energy efficiency and advanced ride quality.

Otis said its Gen2 elevator system also incorporates standard communications links that provide continuous, around-the-clock diagnostic and performance data, passenger voice connection with 24-hour Otis service.

Escalators

Four Otis model S-NPE 1030 escalators, manufactured in Otis' factory in Stadthagen, Germany, will be installed on Corcovado mountain with a rise of 19.8 feet (6 meters) at a 30-degree slope. They will be equipped with intermittent activation, which triggers their operation on demand.

Safety features of the escalators include:

Safety device at start of the handrail: A device installed at the point where the handrail enters the guardrail with contacts activating the service brake. The escalator will stop if a foreign object is introduced between the guardrail and the handrail protection.

Excessive stretching or break in the step chain: A sensor installed in the tension device. If the step chain is stretched or broken, the escalator will disconnect automatically.

Non-reversal device: Directional sensors will be installed to monitor the escalator on a continuous basis. In the event of an unintentional reversal of the escalator direction, the safety circuit will be interrupted and a service brake will stop the escalator.

Water/oil separator: Device to drain rain water/oil collecting on the escalator bottom landing without contaminating con·tam·i·nate

 the environment.

Speed regulator: The speed regulator will be activated if the speed of the escalator exceeds the nominal speed by 20 percent.

Traffic capacity for 9,000 people per hour. The escalator is equipped with a sensor that will stop the escalator in the absence of users. This economizes electric energy consumption by the equipment and reduces wear and tear of the components. Roberto Marinho Foundation

The foundation is a not-for-profit private organization founded by the journalist Roberto Marinho and supported by the Global Organization. The foundation, which is leading the revitalization of the Christ the Redeemer monument, has developed more than 80 projects that restored buildings, churches, museums, theaters and historical monuments throughout Brazil.
