In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  Vice President Neil Peterson. "Osicom/DPI's state-of-the-art network technology and Adobe's combination of host-based printing software and custom designed printer hardware make it easy for NEC workgroup users to access and use network printers without any special software." Finding, installing and using a network printer is easily accomplished through an enhanced HTTP HTTP

Web-server built into the printer. Printing and printer management activities can now be performed better and faster than any other printing technology in its class. As with all Osicom/DPI print server technology, multi-LAN/NOS environments are supported.

Eric Bone, Product Manager at NEC, notes that NEC's SuperScript 1260N Web server is very easy to use and is geared toward the end-user, not the network administrator. "Based on Osicom/DPI's embedded Web server Web server software embedded within a hardware device such as a print server. It is widely used in a myriad of devices, because it allows access to the software via any Web browser, typically for configuring the device or obtaining reports. See ETI and Web server.  technology, the SuperScript 1260N Networking Card enables our end-users to find out valuable printer information without having to physically be at the printer's location. This saves enormous amounts of time and energy on the network administrator's part and reduces 'down time' for the user."

Osicom/DPI's network capabilities and Web technology allow users to access the printer's home page by the assigned printer IP address from within any Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. , thus making it simple to find and use any printer with an intranet. NEC enhanced Osicom/DPI's standard HTTP server so customers can check the home page for basic status on the printer as well as enable system administrators to access a page to check and change network card settings such as IP address and network queue. NEC includes utilities for assigning IP and IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the IP layer in TCP/IP, it contains a network address and allows messages to be routed to a different network or subnet.  addresses over the network in the conventional fashion. The page also includes links to various NEC sites and the ability to download new drivers.

"The Osicom/DPI technology enables us to offer customers a one-stop shop for printer management. We provide a Web page with instructions on how to use the printer, another page with a PDF (Portable Document Format) The de facto standard for document publishing from Adobe. On the Web, there are countless brochures, data sheets, white papers and technical manuals in the PDF format.  version of the user's manual, a page for e-mailing questions to NEC's tech support group, and a supplies page for easy reference," comments Bone. "We even expect to have supply ordering capabilities through the Web in the future."

NEC's SuperScript 1260N, launched in June, is a 12 ppm network laser printer priced at $979, after a $100 rebate. The SuperScript 1260N was the first network printer on the market to include Adobe PrintGear, and features a 60 MHZ Adobe PrintGear imaging processor that provides the power needed to keep up with a 12 ppm engine. These features make the SuperScript 1260N one of the fastest and least expensive network laser printers on the market. And with its Web technology, it's also one of the easiest.

"It's simple enough for the small office and small workgroups because there are no complex tasks. The home page is easy and intuitive, and we are working with NEC to make additional tasks, like driver installation, easier," Peterson said.

Osicom/DPI Offers Standard Network Print Server and Interface

NEC utilizes Osicom/DPI's technically superior high-speed, shared memory interface DPO (Digital Products Option) Networking Card which Adobe incorporated into its PrintGear controller technology. The DPO Networking Card, which is based on a combination of state-of-the-art hardware and software standard form factor, is available to OEMs as an off-the-shelf network-ready print server.

The DPO product is fully developed with a ready-to-use networking solution (Ethernet and Token Ring) that has been engineered and tested with many different brands of laser printers; it is field proven and shipping in 12 OEM products. It offers a standard board design (form factor) - as the Motorola 68340 platform, with plans to migrate to Osicom/DPI's new ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." ) -based product this year. Osicom/DPI continues to enhance the product and add competitive features which the market requires. By incorporating Osicom/DPI's off-the-shelf technology, printer and controller companies are able to get their products network-ready and to market quickly, while minimizing NRE (Non-Recurring Engineering) Refers to the cost of creating a new product, which is paid up front. Contrast with "production cost," which is ongoing and based on the quantity of material produced.  costs and reducing investment.
