The purpose of this handbook is to provide physical therapist students and clinicians with a quick reference for orthopedic disorders. The author successfully provides an easy-to-use guide that is ideal for both students and new clinicians who are managing patients with these common disorders. The book presents major orthopedic diagnoses in a table format that includes characteristics, signs and symptoms, special tests, and interventions. Each chapter concludes with a practical collection of tables on special tests. The tables on disorders, for example, include a table that lists 5 common characteristics, 4 signs and symptoms, 3 special tests, and 7 intervention ideas for lateral epicondylitis lateral epicondylitis Tennis elbow, see there . At the end of the shoulder chapter (chapter 1), the tables on special tests for the shoulder list the purpose(s) of the test, the characteristics of a positive test, the various interpretations, and additional comments for 15 shoulder tests. The author provides general information on a wide variety of orthopedic problems in a book that is divided into 12 chapters that are devoted to a specific body region and 1 chapter that is devoted to radiology for the nonphysician. Because of the numerous pathologies offered for review, there is a cursory depth to the material. The handbook is written to provide general guidelines for a collection of common orthopedic disorders. The book is full of simple information that is organized in a helpful manner. The clear tables provide an easy reference to quickly review the important principles for specific orthopedic disorders. The table format for the information on disorders makes this book an effective reference tool. When students are introduced to these disorders in their coursework or as they begin their orthopedic clinical experiences, this handbook would be a useful addition to a their library. The author has successfully published a quick reference guide that I recommend for physical therapist students who are interested in orthopedics and for physical therapists who are beginning to manage patients with orthopedic disorders.
