 Hospital's Joint Replacement Institute and J. Vernon Luck Sr., M.D., Orthopaedic Research Center received the John Charnley Sir John Charnley (born August 29, 1911–August 5, 1982) was a British orthopaedic surgeon. He pioneered the hip replacement operation, which is now one of the most common operations both in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

Charnley was born in Bury in Lancashire.
 Award from the Hip Society, in recognition of excellence in hip resurfacing Hip Resurfacing is form of arthroplasty which has been developed as a less radical alternative to total hip replacement (THR). In the United States, the FDA approved hip resurfacing using the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) on May 9, 2006.  research.
