In his Caux lecture, Mgr Damaskinos made an impassioned plea for dialogue between Christian churches and between Judaism, Christianity and Islam The historical interaction between Christianity and Islam, in the field of comparative religion, connects fundamental ideas in Christianity with similar ones in Islam. Islam and Christianity share their origins in the Abrahamic tradition though Christianity predates Islam by six . Religion, he said, `is and must be the most important factor for the peaceful coexistence of peoples'. Religion couldn't impose peace or prevent war, but could `tirelessly build up peaceful people'.

Silence and waiting were the first step towards dialogue, he said. Then came listening to what the other person was--and wasn't--saying. `Violence is an expression of the unexpressed,' he said, `the expression of wounded persons or communities who cannot express themselves other than in this way.'
