Orris named executive vice president - operations and distribution services for Southern Pacific Lines.


SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 1995--Donald C. Orris, executive vice president - distribution services since 1990, has been promoted to the newly created position of executive vice president - operations and distribution services for Southern Pacific Lines, Edward L. Moyers, chairman and chief executive officer announced.

The new position combines responsibility for the operating departments -- Transportation, Mechanical and Engineering -- with the sales and marketing functions.

"Bringing together the two line organizations at Southern Pacific under strong leadership will ensure that the entire organization enhances the focus on our customers necessary to deliver the service we are committed to provide," Moyers said. "Don Orris' experience building service-driven organizations will strengthen SP's total company commitment to its customers."

Orris, 53, is a native of Omaha, Neb., and received his bachelor's degree from Denver University in 1964. One of Orris' major achievements at APL (A Programming Language) A high-level mathematical programming language noted for its brevity and matrix generation capabilities. Developed by Kenneth Iverson in the mid-1960s, it runs on micros to mainframes and is often used to develop mathematical models.  was the development of the double-stack train, an important element of intermodal container transportation. He joined Southern Pacific in 1990.

The appointment is effective Jan. 5. Reporting to Orris in his new position will be the chief transportation, mechanical and engineering officers and the heads of the sales, marketing, intermodal, customer service and equipment groups.
