Running a home based business tends to be a bit hectic if for no other reason than you are usually responsible for all aspects of the business in the beginning. This leaves very little time for organizing, but it is necessary for your home business success. Nothing makes working from a home office more frustrating than not being able to find something when you need it. While most home business owners are always busy with a lot to do and never enough time, some of your time needs to be allocated to staying organized daily, or at least once a week. You have to set aside time to put everything in its place. Everyone has heard the common saying that there is a place for everything and everything needs to be in its place, and it is especially true for a home based business.

Organizing once will save you hours over a week, and in the long run you will avoid the time spent hunting down a lost file or paper clips, or whatever it is you need. Many people make more work for themselves by not organizing it right the first time. Many times when they cannot find a file, they will have to recreate it which will take a lot more time than the five seconds it might have taken to put it in its right place to begin with.

Just being able to find your office supplies when needed can save a precious few minutes you might have spent going through the desk drawers or even having to go to the store to buy more. Organizing your office supplies can not only save you time but also keep you from becoming frustrated when you cannot find what you need.

Since the amount of office supplies you maintain in the home can vary depending on the business as well as your budget, if you do find yourself keeping a lot of supplies around, get organized by using a bookcase or an old dresser In which to keep your office supplies. Keep only a small stash on your desk or in the desk drawers. Avoid letting your desk become the storage area for your supplies. Also, when you put supplies in a storage area, make sure the tags are visible for easy identification.

To keep your office running smoothly, consider your desk the focal point of the office. All of the equipment that is frequently used needs to be within easy reach of your desk chair. This will ensure you do not have to get up every few minutes to answer the phone, grab a fax or check the printer. This saves more precious minutes every day when these things are within reach.

In regard to filing, the files that you are currently working on should be in easy reach, whether in a file cabinet next to your desk or in an upright file holder on your desk or adjacent table. Ideally you can pull all the files each morning you intend to use that day and have them ready to work on at any time during the day. Files you are not going to use should be put in their proper place so they can be easily found when they are needed.

By spending a little time organizing your home based office each week, you will find your office a much less frustrating place in which to spend your work day, and at the end of the day you will feel you have accomplished much more work, and you really have, just by saving a few minutes here and there by staying organized.
