Oregon will see a big name in bowl.

Oregon's bowl opponent, whether in the Fiesta or Holiday, is likely to be a team that carries a national reputation into the postseason meeting.

If it's the Fiesta Bowl The Fiesta Bowl, now sponsored by Tostitos tortilla chips (a Frito-Lay product), is a United States college football game played annually since 1971. Originally, the game was hosted in Tempe, Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium where it remained until 2006.  on Jan. 2, the eighth-ranked Ducks could be playing either Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  or Penn State. In the Holiday Bowl, set for Dec. 29 in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. , Oregon would be up against either Oklahoma or Nebraska.

The Holiday Bowl selection committee reduced its choices for the Big 12 berth to the Sooners or Cornhuskers at its meeting on Monday, said Clark Siebrand, co-chair of the panel.

`Either would be a great draw here,' Siebrand said of the Big 12 teams, which each finished 7-4.

It had long been felt that Big 12 North champion Colorado, which will play for the conference title against Texas on Saturday, was the front-runner for the league's spot in San Diego until it lost its past two games, including a 30-3 drubbing by Nebraska on Friday in Boulder.

`Colorado didn't sell itself very well this weekend,' Siebrand said.

The Buffaloes, however, are still in the running for a berth in the Fiesta Bowl because if they upset Texas, they would claim the Big 12's automatic berth to a Bowl Championship Series game.

Barring that upset, Texas will play in the Rose Bowl for the national title and no other Big 12 team will be in a BCS (1) (The British Computer Society, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, www.bcs.org) The chartered body for information technology professionals in the U.K., founded in 1957.  game. After the BCS, the next choice of Big 12 teams goes to the Cotton Bowl, which is expected to take Texas Tech, and then the Holiday Bowl makes its selection.

The Alamo Bowl This article is about the NCAA Alamo Bowl college football game that began in 1993. For the 1947 college football game that had the same name, see Alamo Bowl (1947).

The Valero Alamo Bowl
has stated it will take either Nebraska or Oklahoma, the team not chosen by the Holiday Bowl.

All of that would be altered, however, if Colorado upset Texas, which would then leave the Longhorns as a possible at-large selection for a BCS game, or if not in the Cotton Bowl.

The BCS bowls are the Rose, Fiesta, Orange and Sugar, and they pair up six league champions along with two at-large teams, one of those almost certainly Notre Dame because of its national following.

from the Big East. The Big 12, the Southeastern and Atlantic Coast will hold their conference championship games on Saturday to determine three other berths.

Oregon is still hopeful of one of the at-large berths. Assuming there are no surprising results Saturday, those two choices would seem to be from among the Ducks, Notre Dame, Ohio State and possibly an SEC team that didn't win that conference, either LSU LSU Louisiana State University

or Auburn. If, as expected, the national title game in the Rose Bowl matches USC and Texas, the Fiesta Bowl would have first choice from among available teams, likely opting for either the Irish or Penn State, the latter available since the Big Ten representative wouldn't be in the Rose Bowl.

Then the Orange Bowl would choose and is expected to take the team left by the Fiesta Bowl, the Irish or Nittany Lions, to presumably pre·sum·a·ble

The only cross-up to that scenario would come if the Fiesta took Notre Dame first and the Orange then chose either Auburn or LSU, if the latter lost the SEC title game to Georgia. That pick of an SEC team would thus be the second at-large selection and leave Penn State for the Fiesta. The assumption is that for an opponent for the SEC titlist ti·tlist

, the Sugar Bowl will have West Virginia, 11th in the BCS but assured of a berth because of its Big East championship.

Of the known at-large candidates, in the latest BCS rankings Ohio State is sixth, Oregon seventh, Notre Dame eighth and Auburn 10th, though placing doesn't matter in the BCS poll except for first and second, which determines the pairing for the title game, and the requirement for an at-large team to be ranked 12th or better.

UO director of athletics Bill Moos remains hopeful that the Ducks will be selected by the Fiesta Bowl, though he acknowledges that Notre Dame has probably assured itself of one of the at-large spots in a BCS game after the Irish rallied to beat Stanford on Saturday for its required ninth victory.

Asked about the possibility of playing the Irish in the Fiesta Bowl, Moos said Monday `we'd love that,' and said he told Fiesta Bowl officials `they'd need two stadiums to hold all the fans for that game,' so strong would be the interest among Oregon followers.

Oregon has only played Notre Dame twice, losing at South Bend South Bend, city (1990 pop. 105,511), seat of St. Joseph co., N Ind., on the great south bend of the St. Joseph River, in a farming and mint-growing region; inc. as a city 1865.  in 1974 and tying at Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity.  in 1982.

Moos said he was `continuing to have a dialogue (with Fiesta Bowl representatives) and will do so throughout the week, (but) most of what I've got to say is repeating what I had a chance to discuss with them when we met in person' last week in Arizona.

During the meeting of the Holiday Bowl 12-member selection committee on Monday, Moos said he `had a good visit' via speakerphone. `I just wanted to express to all of them that if that was the opportunity presented to us, we'd be elated.'

It's no sure thing that if the Ducks don't play in the Fiesta Bowl that they will go to San Diego. If UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
upsets USC on Saturday to forge a three-way deadlock for the Pac-10 title, the Trojans take the league's automatic BCS berth by a tiebreaker tie·break·er

tie
, and would play in the Fiesta Bowl. That would leave the Holiday Bowl to choose between the Bruins and Ducks, both at 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the Pac-10.

`That made for an interesting discussion,' Siebrand said of his committee's meeting on Monday.

Siebrand said the Holiday Bowl doesn't want a rematch from the regular season, which would rule out UCLA playing Oklahoma in San Diego. He said, however, that a scheduled game between the Ducks and Sooners next season would have no impact on the Holiday Bowl selection.

Moos said he told the Holiday Bowl selectors that any of the Big 12 possible opponents `would play well with us.'

Oregon lost to Oklahoma 31-7 in the 2004 season, leaving the Ducks winless in five games against the Sooners, though all have been played in Norman. Oklahoma is scheduled to play at Autzen Stadium on Sept. 16, 2006 and Moos said there would be `drama with a sandwich game' at a bowl.

The Ducks have only beaten Nebraska once in six previous meetings, and that was the season opener in 1953. In the most recent meetings between Oregon and the 'Huskers, Nebraska has prevailed in routs, by 61-7 in 1974, 63-0 in 1985 and 48-14 in 1986, with all of those games in Lincoln.

`A game with Nebraska sells itself,' Moos said. `We haven't played (the 'Huskers) recently, but our fans would love to have a matchup with Nebraska.'

If the Ducks don't play in the Fiesta or Holiday, they would be in the Sun Bowl - this year on Dec. 30 - for the third time in the past seven seasons. Both of those previous trips to El Paso El Paso (ĕl pă`sō), city (1990 pop. 515,342), seat of El Paso co., extreme W Tex., on the Rio Grande opposite Juárez, Mex.; inc. 1873. , Texas, matched the Ducks against Minnesota, and the Gophers (7-4) would be a possible opponent again this year.
