Six people died in separate traffic crashes on Oregon's highways over the extended holiday weekend, a number slightly below the 37-year average, Oregon State Police reported.

On average, seven people die each year on Oregon highways over Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894.  weekend. Last year, six people died. Wrecks killed 10 people the year before.

This weekend's deadly crashes included Saturday's three-car wreck on Interstate 5 about 10 miles north of Eugene.

Troopers arrested 62 people for drunken driving in 2005.

Meanwhile, sheriff's deputies across the state arrested a total of 432 people over the weekend, including 75 people charged with drunken driving and 82 others for various felony crimes.
