Oregon Governor Awards State's Highest Honor in Tourism to Long-Time Tourism Leader, Partnership Advocate; Joe D'Alessandro of POVA Recognized at Annual Conference.

The Governor made the presentation at the 22nd annual Oregon Governor's Tourism Conference in Eugene, Ore.

"Joe D'Alessandro has contributed years of leadership, passion, intelligent planning and commitment to Oregon's tourism and hospitality industry," the Governor said. "This award recognizes his vision of what tourism in Oregon could and should be. Through strong local, regional and national partnerships, he has helped establish Oregon as a highly desirable travel destination and has strengthened an industry that provides livelihoods for tens of thousands of our citizens."

Governor Kulongoski applauded D'Alessandro's efforts to engage tourism partners across the state and nation to build awareness of Oregon as a tourism destination. In addition to his duties at POVA POVA Portland Oregon Visitors Association

) and was selected as Tourism Director of the Year in 1995. The three-day conference, held in Eugene, Ore., began Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. , April 2, and ends on Tuesday, April 4. Attracting more than 350 participants from all corners of the state, the annual conference has focused on the economic benefits of Oregon's tourism industry, which recorded its highest tourism-related income in 2005 at $7.4 billion. The event is developed and presented by Travel Oregon and hosted by the Convention & Visitors Association of Lane County Oregon.
