) and Oregon-based Nike Inc. sponsored the drive in honor of America Recycles Day and the 10th anniversary of the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Program. The winning team collected 9.5 boxes of worn-out athletic shoes that will be recycled into sports and play surfaces to be donated around the world.

Also participating in the drive were Rep. Earl Blumenauer Earl Blumenauer (born August 16, 1948) is a Democratic U.S. representative from Oregon, representing Oregon's 3rd congressional district.

Gordon Harold Smith (born May 25, 1952) is Oregon's junior United States Senator, currently serving his second term. He is a member of the Republican Party.
 and Sen. Ron Wyden. Nearly 500 pairs of worn-out athletic shoes wore collected in total. Congressman DeFazio's office will help the NRC and Nike select a charity to receive a product donation worth $2,000 intended to increase children's physical activity.

The shoes collected by the Oregon delegation will De transported to Fairfax County, Va., to be included in the area's ongoing Nike Reuse-A-Shoe collection. As a program participant, Fairfax County has committed to collect a minimum of 5,000 pairs of worn-out athletic shoes in the coming year.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program recycles 1-2 million pairs of post-consumer and defective shoes each year and has helped donate more than 150 sports surfaces around the world to encourage physical activity among children. The Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program is an integral part of NikeGo, a long-term commitment to promote healthier lifestyles for kids through physical activity.

Individuals interesting in participating in the national Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program can find a list of addresses on the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Web site, www.nikereuseashoe.com, send in their shoes directly to the Nike Recycling Center in Wilsonville, Ore., or drop their shoes off at any of the 11 Niketowns in the United States or at participating retailers.
