Sneed, who fished shallower than most, also scaled down to 8-pound test Stren MagnaThin line and a standard, round 1/4-ounce splitshot. His delicate approach around the sparse clumps of weeds paid off during Saturday's final round with an 18-pound limit of smallmouth that outpaced day two leader, Gene Batey, Jr. of Pasco, Wash. by nearly 3 1/2 pounds. Although Batey had a solid 14-pound, 5-ounce limit by 9 o'clock on the final day, it was not enough to hold off Sneed's charge. Batey used 8-pound Berkley Trilene line rigged with a 1/2-ounce Mojo Carolina rig in order to make the proper presentations with either a Jerry's four-inch ring worm (white sand) or a green pumpkin/chartreuse tail lizard. He targeted the up-current end of slightly submerged main-river islands that narrowed as they sloped into deeper water. The key areas were in eight feet of water where clumps of grass offered small holding areas for feeding bass. Many of the other anglers struggled to catch fish in deeper water. The event will be covered in the November issue of B.A.S.S. TIMES and the December issue of BASSMASTER magazine.
