The "Oregon 100 Best" Survey

This year, Oregon Business teamed with Watson Wyatt Worldwide to field the "100 Best" survey. "Our goal was to implement an objective, comprehensive survey," says O'Toole. We joined forces with Watson Wyatt because as human resources and benefits consultants they are known for their research expertise."

"We designed the "100 Best" survey as a way to measure and recognize workplace excellence," adds Al Lopus, Watson Wyatt Worldwide's Northwest regional managing consultant. "We developed it using Watson Wyatt's WorkUSA(c) database, which is built from regular national polling of employees across the country."

With two parts -- one for management and one for employees -- the survey asks 30 questions. It covers areas including recruiting and hiring, organizational communications, performance standards, benefits, compensation, and career development. The answers illuminate employee and company opinions about their workplaces.

Watson Wyatt and Oregon Business used a panel of five independent judges to establish company rankings for the list.

"As we look at the survey outcomes, we see again and again that successful companies value their employees. They establish mutual respect, communication and trust. They deal with company weaknesses and reinforce strengths. And their employees respond by staying with the company and delivering great work outcomes," says Lopus. "Watson Wyatt's research demonstrates that these outcomes directly correlate to a company's financial strength."

"We see that this strength in the Oregon business community helps set a statewide standard for quality. Oregon Business and Watson Wyatt proudly support the important work of the state's enterprises in reaching for and attaining great success," concludes O'Toole.

An alphabetical list of Oregon's 100 Best Companies to Work For follows. For more information about the five large and small category finalists, see the companies' websites, which are listed above, or contact Madeline Johnson at 206/782-5649.
