Orchid still lifes: elementary.

Objectives

Students learn all about orchids and the different varieties. They watch them grow and take care of them. They record their observations with sketches. They experiment with a variety of media.

Materials

Charcoal pencils, white drawing paper, oil pastels, pastels, watercolors, tempera tempera (tĕm`pərə), painting method in which finely ground pigment is mixed with a solidifying base such as albumen, fig sap, or thin glue.  paints, chalk, and brushes.

Introduction

Through careful observation throughout the school year, students compare the growing conditions and changes in orchids. Flowers can last for one day or for many weeks. The dendrobium requires bright light and some sun. Water when the soil begins to dry. Keep temperatures at 45-65 [degrees] F at night and 65-95 [degrees] F during the day. Fertilize on a regular basis. Water and fertilizer must be reduced after blooming.

The paphiopedilum (often referred to as the "slipper orchid orchid, popular name for members of the Orchidaceae, a family of perennial herbs widely distributed in both hemispheres. The unusually large family (of some 450 genera and an estimated 10,000 to 17,500 species) includes terrestrial, epiphytic (see epiphyte), and ") is an excellent houseplant houseplant

and needs only bright light and little sun. It grows well under artificial lights, but requires constant moisture and little fertilizer. The temperature requirements are about the same as the dendrobium, but it needs water constantly.

Procedure

Throughout the year, and at various phases in the orchid's development, students sketch the orchids with charcoal pencils. When an orchid blooms, they learn to make their sketches quickly, for some blooms are very short lived. To culminate culminate, in astronomy, the maximum height in the sky reached by a celestial body on a given day. At the culminate the body is crossing the observer's celestial meridian and is said to be in upper transit.  their orchid growing experience, students refer to their sketches when completing their finished still-life painting still-life painting

.

For the finished painting, they have a choice of media: oil pastels, pastels, watercolors, water crayons, tempera paints, or chalk.

Evaluation

Students compare the effects of the different media and give reasons for their choices of media. They share their feelings for the flowers and review the things they observed and the facts they learned.
