"We're using technology as a tool to attract new listeners," said Kansas City Symphony Executive Director Roland Valliere. "We must be relevant and leading edge in order to attract a new generation of patrons."

The Kansas City initiative will be unveiled April 5, 6 and 7 when student videos, called digital stories, are shown at the Symphony's performance entitled, "Of War and Remembrance War and Remembrance is a novel by Herman Wouk, published in 1978, which is the sequel to The Winds of War. It continues the story of the extended Henry family and the Jastrow family starting on 15 December 1941 and ending on 6 August 1945. ." The themed concerts explore war and conflict through the music of Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, contemporary American composer John Adams, and Russian Dmitri Shostakovich Noun 1. Students from four area schools (Blue Valley West, Olathe East, Frontier Trail Junior High and New Mark Middle schools) have created personal accounts of their own or family members' experiences with war and conflict. A few put their feelings about the September 11 terrorist attacks to words, pictures and music. Some chose family photographs and stories about a grandfather who served in World War II. Others downloaded photos from the Library of Congress to look at the Civil War through the eyes of Walt Whitman's poem "The Wound Dresser," which was the basis for John Adams' composition. After the concerts, the student videos will be on the symphony web site, www.kcsymphony.org.

"Students listened to complex music and gained understanding of what inspired the composer. They used this music in their own exploration of war and conflict resolution," Valliere said. "We've made a connection with these kids that we hope will last."

The curriculum and technology components of the program were developed by The Learning Exchange in Kansas City and The Center for Digital Story Telling in Berkeley.

To engage another audience, the symphony is asking veterans and their families to write personal accounts of their contributions to our country and to post them on-line now through Memorial Day. While at www.kcsymphony.org, they can listen to snippets of the "Of War and Remembrance" concert and read about the composers. "We're hoping to touch a new segment of our community," Valliere said.

"The Internet and technology are opening new pathways to creative expression and musical enjoyment," Valliere said. "If classical music is to be relevant to new listeners, we have to exploit technology just as pop and other musical forms have done so successfully."
