Optomec Delivers LENS System to Leading University in Korea.

System to Be Used for Rapid Prototyping of Advanced Steel Alloys

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Optomec([R]) Inc. announced that the world-renowned Pohang University of Science and Technology Pohang University of Science and Technology or POSTECH is a private university, based in Pohang, South Korea, which is dedicated to research and education in science and technology. In 1998, it was ranked by Asiaweek as the best science and technology university in Asia.  (POSTECH POSTECH Pohang University of Science and Technology ) in Kyungbuk, Korea, took delivery of their LENS([R]) (Laser Engineered Net Shaping Laser engineered net shaping or LENS® is a technology developed by Sandia National Laboratories for fabricating metal parts directly from a computer-aided design (CAD) solid model by using a metal powder injected into a molten pool created by a focused, high-powered laser ) system at the end of January. POSTECH adds to Optomec's growing international customer base, including France, Germany, India, Japan, China, and Singapore.

POSTECH is known as one of the world's premier technology schools; in May 1998, Asiaweek Magazine ranked POSTECH as Asia's best science and technology school. POSTECH selected the LENS system to rapidly prototype new steel alloys for the automotive industry. Dr. In Gee Kim, Assistant Professor of Computational Metallurgy says, "POSTECH chose LENS because of its ability to produce fully functional samples with superior metallurgical properties, while also reducing the number of steps required to develop and test new steel alloys." POSTECH's LENS system will be housed in their Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology (GIFT) lab.

GIFT has global links to the steel industry, the major users of steel products, and the automotive, shipbuilding, packaging, and petroleum industries. GIFT possesses a wide range of the most advanced scientific equipment in materials research, and their new LENS system will allow them to increase their capacity for new alloy development.
