Open Architecture Linux Operating System.

Implemented as an enhancement to Lynux Works' BlueCatT Linux and the Linux-compatible LynxOS real-time operating system (operating system) Real-Time Operating System - (RTOS) Any operating system where interrupts are guaranteed to be handled within a certain specified maximum time, thereby making it suitable for control of hardware in embedded systems and other time-critical applications.  (OS), the new OS extensions will provide full support for CompactPCI hot swap To pull out a component from a system and plug in a new one while the main power is still on. Also called "hot plug" and "hot insertion," hot swap is a feature of USB devices, allowing an external drive, network adapter or other peripheral to be plugged in without having to power down the  operations allowing on-line repair of standard peripheral controllers as well as dynamic system reconfiguration. The OS will also support failover between redundant system host processors in a CompactPCI system and advanced platform management through the Intelligent Platform Management Interface The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) specification defines a set of common interfaces to computer hardware and firmware which system administrators can use to monitor system health and manage the system. Several dozen companies support IPMI.  (IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) A protocol for monitoring server hardware for temperature, voltage, chassis intrusion, etc. Introduced in 1998 by Intel, HP, NEC and Dell, IPMI defines a standard set of messages for the characteristics of hardware ).

RadiSys Corp and LynuxWorks, are to develop an Open Architecture High-Availability Linux[sim] system targeted for telecom and embedded system Any electronic system that uses a CPU chip, but that is not a general-purpose workstation, desktop or laptop computer. Such systems generally use microprocessors, or they may use custom-designed chips or both.  applications which require "five-nines" or better availability. "Five-nines" availability refers to system availability greater than 99.999% of the time, implying 5 minutes or less down time per year.

RadiSys and LynuxWorks software will function through open, standard interfaces. The key specification that makes this possible is IPMI, which has been adopted as the standard platform management interface for CompactPCI systems. By using IPMI for all platform management functions, the High-Availability BlueCat Linux system can operate on any manufacturer's platform that conforms to this specification.
