Shame on Clive Barnes Clive Barnes (born May 13, 1927) in London, Oxford educated, chief Dance, Drama and Opera critic for the New York Post, is a colorful writer and broadcaster, whose career has been long and prolific.  for claiming to have seen Alicia Alonso Noun 1. . After her retirement, it was several years before it was reinstated, and Sallie Wilson took on the role.

Alonso did grab one of Kaye's roles: Lizzie Borden For other persons named Lizzie Borden, see Lizzie Borden (disambiguation).

in Fall River Legend Fall River Legend is a ballet based on the life of Lizzie Borden. One of choreographer Agnes de Mille's best-known works, it featured an original score by Morton Gould and scenic design by Oliver Smith. . Kaye was in the hospital when the premiere was scheduled, and Alonso took over, later demanding equal sharing of the role when Kaye recovered. This is probably what Barnes recalled, but he hated the ballet and made the now famous statement about the role: "A good vehicle, but so is a subway train."

CLIVE BARNES RESPONDS: Nothing beats accuracy except absentmindedness. I was 100 percent wrong. I was thinking of ABT's second visit to Covent Garden in 1950 when, indeed, Alonso did alternate in that splendid vehicle, Fall River Legend. Unforgivably, I mixed up Hagar with Lizzie--which, I suppose, is rather what Agnes did, isn't it?
