Ontario sets 22 new health centres and new funding for existing CHC's.


Toronto -- The Ontario government will fund creation of 22 new Community Health Centres and 17 new satellite CHCs, fulfilling a long standing promise of the Liberal party, Health and LongTerm Care Minister George Smitherman George Smitherman MPP (born 1964) is a Canadian politician, who represents the provincial riding of Toronto Centre in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. He is notable for being the first openly gay Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) elected in Ontario, and the first openly  announced. This new funding of $74.6 million over three years is the largest-ever expansion of Ontario's Community Health Centre system. The existing CHCs across the province will receive extra funding for staffing and program enhancements. The Association of Ontario Health Centres called the announcement historic.

"The scope of today's announcement is unprecedented. The Minister has demonstrated a depth of understanding that positive health outcomes are the result of a combination of quality primary health care, health promotion, and community development," said Denise Brooks, President of the AOHC AOHC Association of Ontario Health Centres (Canada) .

Existing CHCs offer services such as youth peer support programs, programs to address violence, youth leadership training and skills development, parent and child programs, outreach to isolated seniors.

One new CHC and eight new satellite CHCs will be funded for Toronto neighbourhoods, particularly in at-risk communities identified in the City of Toronto and the United Way of Greater Toronto's Strong Neighbourhoods Report. The neighborhoods are: Crescent Town, Flemingdon Park--Victoria Village, Jamestown, Jane-Finch, Malvern, Westminster-Branson, Weston-Mount Dennis, Lawrence Heights Lawrence Heights is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located in the former city of North York, which was merged with five other municipalities and a regional government to form a new City of Toronto in 1998. , Steeles-L'Amoureaux, Dorset Park Dorset Park is a neighbourhood in the city of Toronto (Scarborough). The neighbourhood is bordered by Highway 401 to the North, Midland Ave to the East, Flora Dr to the South and Birchmount Rd to the West.

Dorset Park is a middle income neighbourhood.
, Eglinton East-Kennedy Park, Scarborough Village and Kingston-Galloway.

Other new CHCs or satellites include: Chatham/ Kent, Wallaceburg, Woodstock, St. Thomas, Markdale, Shelldale, Fort Erie, St. Catharines, Brantford Port Colborne, Niagara Falls, Bramalea, Jamestown, Vaughan, Malton, Kipling-Dixon, Gooch- Cooper Mill, Crescent Town, the Junction and North High Park, Jane-Finch, Don Mills- Finch, York Centre, Weston-Mount Dennis, Malvern, Minden, Port Hope Pickering, Brock Township, Smiths Falls, Belleville, Napanee Trenton, Cornwall, Nepean, Prescott-Russell, Collingwood Midland, Sudbury East Kapuskasing, Sturgeon sturgeon, primitive fish of the northern regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. Unlike evolutionarily advanced fishes, it has a fine-grained hide, with very reduced scalation, a mostly cartilaginous skeleton, upturned tail fins, and a mouth set well back on the  Falls, Thunder Bay.
