Ontario lifts restrictions on newly graduated midwives. (Health).


TORONTO Toronto (tərŏn`tō), city (1998 est pop. 2,400,000), provincial capital, S Ont., Canada, on Lake Ontario. Toronto is the largest city in Canada and since the 1970s has been one of the fastest-changing cities in North America, experiencing  -- In response to public protest the Ontario Ministry of Health lifted the restriction that kept groups from using previously committed but unused funds to hire newly-graduated midwives.

Additionally, the Ministry has said that it will make a funding commitment early each year in order that practice groups can plan and integrate new midwives into their practices immediately upon graduation Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the associated ceremony. The date of event is often called degree day. The event itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. .

The restriction was lifted after a rally of more than 250 midwifery midwifery (mĭd`wī'fərē), art of assisting at childbirth. The term midwife for centuries referred to a woman who was an overseer during the process of delivery. Ministry of Health has reversed a change in the way midwifery is funded that would have made graduating midwives wait seven months to begin practicing or to leave the province to find work.
