Ontario expands autism services and supports.


TORONTO -- "We are moving from a system that focused on the most severe cases to one that is more universal," claimed Ontario Minister of Children and Youth Services Dr. Marie Bountrogianni Marie Bountrogianni BA, MEd, D.Ed (born December 10, 1956) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. She is currently a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and is a cabinet minister in the government of Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty. . Beginning this fall, new supports for families of children with autism autism (ô`tĭzəm), developmental disability resulting from a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain. It is characterized by the abnormal development of communication skills, social skills, and reasoning.  will include:

* the teachers who have children with autism in their classroom will have access to 75 newly hired autism consultants to help them support the children in the classroom;

* increase the number of Transition Coordinators, from 13 to 26, to help children move smoothly from preschool programs into schools;

* More therapists and psychologists This list includes notable psychologists and contributors to psychology, some of whom may not have thought of themselves primarily as psychologists but are included here because of their important contributions to the discipline.  to provide Intensive Behaviour Intervention to 20 per cent more preschool-age children;

* New guidelines guidelines,

 to enable more children to be assessed sooner so they can take advantage of preschool supports.
