Ontario begins unannounced inspections of nursing homes.


TORONTO -- The Ontario government has initiated a program of unannounced annual inspections of the province's nursing homes and created a toll-free phone line for families to register their complaints. Minister George Smitherman George Smitherman MPP (born 1964) is a Canadian politician, who represents the provincial riding of Toronto Centre in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. He is notable for being the first openly gay Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) elected in Ontario, and the first openly  nursing homes a "top priority" of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

The province's 544 nursing homes will no longer advance notice of annual inspections. A toll-free phone number (1-866-434-0144) will be promoted through a poster campaign. Fourteen ministry employees have been assigned to deal specifically with long-term care long-term care (LTC),

The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention Suicide prevention is an umbrella term for the collective efforts of mental health practitioners and related professionals to reduce the incidence of suicide through proactive preventive measures.  / L'association canadienne pour la prevention du suicide has published a draft blueprint of a national strategy for suicide prevention strategy.
