Online service helps meet EU Packaging Specs.

SpecialChem of Paris, France, the creator of the plastics additives information website, www.specialchem4polymers.com, has launched MigraPass, a new online service to help manufacturers comply with the 2002 European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the

European Community
regulations on hazardous substances in food packaging. EU Directive (European Union Directive) A set of privacy requirements that took effect in 1998 and ordered European member nations to enact compliant legislation. It deals with the establishment of Data Protection Authorities, people's rights to personal information and enforcement.  2002/72/EC regulates migration of such substances into food and requires compliance by all members of the supply chain. Because extraction testing can require considerable time and effort, SpecialChem is offering fast, online migration calculation using software algorithms said to be approved by the EU. MigraPass was developed in collaboration with Fabes GmbH Research Co. of Germany, which developed the migration simulation software Simulation software is based on the process of imitating a real phenomenon with a set of mathematical formulas. It is, essentially, a program that allows the user to observe an operation through simulation without actually running the program.  based on thousands of lab experiments to validate the migration model. Also cooperating with SpecialChem is Pira International, a U.K. consulting and testing firm with expertise on packaging regulations.

MigraPass is aimed at resin producers, compounders, masterbatch producers, and packaging processors. They can test new formulations and products before they go into commercial production. MigraPass is currently limited to monolayer mon·o·lay·er
n.
1. A film or layer one molecule thick formed at the interface between water and either oil or air by a substance such as a partially esterified fatty acid that contains both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in the same
packaging, though the EU is expected to approve a multi-layer migration model within the next two years. Packaging materials that can be tested with the approved monolayer model include PE, PP, PS, PET, and nylon. PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride.

Synthetic resin, an organic polymer made by treating vinyl chloride monomers with a peroxide.
is not yet authorized by the EU. Inks and coatings are not currently taken into consideration.

Users of MigraPass (available at www.migrapass.com) enter such data as the packaging thickness, polymer type, physical form, additives, and contact conditions such as time and temperature. MigraPass returns in real time a migration report and an EU SML 1. SML - Standard ML.
2. SML - Small Machine Language. Barnes, ICI 1969. Real-time language, an ALGOL variant, and the predecessor of RTL. "SML User's Guide", J.G.P. Barnes, ICI, TR JGPB/69/35 (1969).
(Specific Migration Limits) Compliance Certificate. MigraPass data can be integrated into users' technical data sheets. Each test costs around 100 euros.
