More than 350 of the world's opinion leaders and experts in the use of the Internet to expand the power of education will meet in Washington, D.C., March 20-21, to discuss ways that higher education institutions can ramp up their efforts to adopt online learning quickly, efficiently and economically.

Blackboard Summit 2000 -- "Realizing the Vision: Scaling Online Education from the Classroom to the Institution," will bring together educators, industry experts and policymakers - some from as far away as Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and The Netherlands as well as Canada. Topics will include: the overall impact of the Internet on education, integrating online and campus learning, e-commerce in education, and course marketing.

Speakers will include Rep. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), a member of both the House Education Committee and the Congressional Web-based Education Commission;

Arthur Levine, president and professor of education of Teachers College at Columbia University; and Scott Jaschik, editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education.

More than 300 people participated in last year's Blackboard Summit. The keynote speaker was FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  Chairman William E. Kennard.

This has been a pivotal year for online education. The use of the Internet in higher education, as a supplement to the classroom and for distance learning, has blossomed throughout the world. The worldwide higher education market exceeds $700 billion and the growth of the Internet is having a strong impact on its development.

Among the scores of institutions represented at the event will be: The American University, Arizona State University Arizona State University, at Tempe; coeducational; opened 1886 as a normal school, became 1925 Tempe State Teachers College, renamed 1945 Arizona State College at Tempe. Its present name was adopted in 1958. , Boston University, Dartmouth, Florida State University Florida State University, at Tallahassee; coeducational; chartered 1851, opened 1857. Present name was adopted in 1947. Special research facilities include those in nuclear science and oceanography. , Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University Johns Hopkins University, mainly at Baltimore, Md.
