One that didn't get away.

A monster fish which tips the scales at just under 11 stone will provide a feast for more than 100 people this weekend.

Measuring 5ft and thought to be 60-years-old, the hefty halibut halibut: see flatfish.

Head chef Simon Tennet, 42, who has worked in restaurants in the North-East for 20 years, has never seen such a heavyweight.

He said: "It is a beauty. I couldn't believe it when they rang to say how big it was ( it is the size of an adult or two small children.

 for 13 years and we had some whoppers in then but the biggest I have seen to date is 86lbs ( this one is twice as big.

"I was shocked when I saw it but over the moon at the same time. It should serve well over 100 people."

Simon, a father-of-three, who lives and works at the Lobster Pot said: "It's amazing it has escaped being caught for so long. It must be getting close to retirement age."

The fish ( which is about 15 times larger than the average halibut ( will feed 70 at a joint 21st and 79th birthday tonight.

Carl Johnson, of Whiteleas Way, South Shields, is the 23-year-old chef de partie at the Lobster Pot.

Carl said: "It's a monster ( a slippery customer ( but I look forward to working with it. It dwarfs my son Jordan who is only three. He's got a lot of growing to do before he catches up."
