One of Prince Charles's purposes in making his first post-Di
visit to these shores, according to the Sunday Telegraph, was to
communicate his concerns that the United States has been "too
confrontational" in its attitudes toward Islam. The Telegraph
infers this purpose from Charles's public pro-Muslim statements,
and perhaps from insider information. Charles's staff simply said
that he never issues "political messages around religion."
Whatever Charles's intentions, surely he knows that the United
States during the last four years has liberated tens of millions of
Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq from despots. He knows this because his
own nation has been with us every step of the way. Doesn't the
modern monarchy show its discretion "around" politics by
understanding the policies of its own elected government?
