I aligned each learning outcome with one of the four styles of learning and then developed the expert group tasks--what each student would take back to the home group. Learning Styles and Group Task Sensing-Thinker: Fact-based learners become experts on use and care of the camera. Intuitive-Thinker: The analyzing group determines how and why David Hockney combined many viewpoints in his work. Sensing-Feeling: The village group helps the others choose locations and lead discussions about how Hockney's photographs relate to their lives. Intuitive-Feeler: Aesthetically minded students become the framing experts for their group. Each group would create a photograph with multiple views and prepare it for an exhibition. Teachers in Action The expert groups summarized their material, came up with an instructional strategy and a visual aid, and returned to the home groups to teach others. Each expert group developed two questions for the home groups to answer after the presentations. This mirrored a teacher in action: develop a new understanding of a body of knowledge and then assess how well the class has learned it. They used the school's digital camera to capture locations and present possible choices to the home group. After the village expert group's presentation, each home group had to decide upon the location for its picture and who would be shooting it. The Photo Shoot and Critique On photo day, the class walked to the chosen locations and the photographers in the home group took the pictures. Photos were developed by the next day. Assessment After the discussion, each student had a chance for personal reflection. Other strategies included: checks on participation during the home and expert group meetings; questions answered by home groups after the expert presentations; and the overall quality and final presentation of the photographs.
