One fierce princess: queer icon She-Ra: Princess of Power hits DVD in style this summer. Because not just anyone can keep their dignity in a miniskirt and tiara.

Phranc. She-Ra was mentioned in one of Phranc's concert openers--which typically name-dropped hot topics--during the princess's '80s heyday. "She was powerful, Amazon, and a hot femme, which was also a good thing," recalls Phranc. "It was fantastic that there was a superhero for little girls. She was new and modern, while Wonder Woman was old-school."

Mattel began to produce She-Ra (and friends) action figures in 1984 in hopes that they would appeal to a female demographic not drawn to the toy company's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe line, which had debuted two years earlier. As with He-Man, Mattel contracted with animation studio Filmation to produce a Saturday-morning cartoon series to promote the new line of toys.

The cartoon series, launched in 1985, followed the adventures of She-Ra, He-Man's twin sister, who would transform from her secret alter ego A doctrine used by the courts to ignore the corporate status of a group of stockholders, officers, and directors of a corporation in reference to their limited liability so that they may be held personally liable for their actions when they have acted fraudulently or unjustly or when , Princess Adora (who, campily, looked no different), by raising her magical Sword of Protection and shouting, "For the honor of Grayskull--I am She-Ra!" A typical She-Ra: Princess of Power episode saw She-Ra and her friends--including the suspiciously queer archer Bow, ditzy dit·zy

Although it aired for only two seasons (93 episodes in total), She-Ra garnered an unforeseen (or was it?) LGBT fan base. Some devotees, like Cleveland illustrator Kevenn Smith, were just children at the time. Forbidden to play with dolls by his parents, Smith encouraged his sister to buy She-Ra toys and, once behind closed doors, played with them himself. Today, one of his most cherished childhood memories entails getting a photo taken with an actress dressed as She-Ra at a promotional event.

So why is She-Ra still appealing? "He-Man was great, but She-Ra was more well-rounded," he explains. "She had so many powers, and her character was based much more in compassion. She could heal and communicate with animals; she was fighting a rebellion against the status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war. The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy.  led by an oppressive male force. I learned a lot of lessons from those cartoons. In one episode she had to fight to save Hordak, and she cares so much about all life, even her enemy's--it really stressed the importance of compassion. For a kid getting picked on by bullies, that's a huge lesson to learn."

singer and illustrator Stefano Perrone Jr. also saw profound lessons, specifically for gay youths, in She-Ra and her admittedly fabulous transformation sequence. "She-Ra demonstrates the symbolic possibilities of freedom from sexual repression," he says. "The Evil Horde can easily represent society as a whole. It certainly has been my experience that upon embracing my sexuality and 'special destiny' I was endowed with powers of independence, courage, and compassion. I too was transformed into a beacon of truth against an army of darkness For the wrestling stable, see .

A short-lived 2002 TV return of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe failed to include She-Ra, but she finally resurfaced when 1984's He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special made its way to DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.
