Presented by the An Ceangal Mara Foundation, a nonprofit cultural arts and education group, the festival will include live music, dance and storytelling, athletic events, cultural demonstrations and activities, merchants and artisans, purveyors of food and drink, live heritage animals and a firelighting ceremony at 8 p.m. Saturday. The foundation's explanation of "this traditional and carefully researched cultural season passage" captures the spirit of the entire festival: "Fire logs are laid out in the ages-old manner, torches are lit and the charm of the nine trees is spoken, resulting in two giant caldrons of fire. After the traditional blessing of the animals, this is your opportunity to emerge from between the Bealltuinn fires having been blessed by your community. Spirits are refreshed, tears are shed and the bright half of the year is welcomed." But the festival includes much more than solemn ceremonies. Music and dance Three brothers who call themselves Kirkmount will play "Scotch Snap" dancing music from Nova Scotia Nova Scotia (nō`və skō`shə) [Lat.,=new Scotland], province (2001 pop. 908,007), 21,425 sq mi (55,491 sq km), E Canada. In English, Nic an Fhleisdeir is president of the An Ceangal Mara Foundation. In Gaelic, she's the organizations' seanchai, or lorekeeper, and its gannas, or ambassador. The stories she will share include "The Great Alfa & the Hero CuChulainn," "The Maiden of Loch Ness" and "Arthur & the Sovereignty of the Land." Athletics The Adventurous Bowmen, a traditional archery club, will display traditionally made bows and arrows and demonstrate their use all weekend. She also will discuss the tools, materials and processes used to create them. The Gaelige Mor Irish Language Study Group and its founder, Mik Thompson, will present an historical and cultural overview and a primer on Irish pronunciation, including some memorable phrases and useful expressions, at 4 p.m. Saturday and at noon Sunday. Lane Community College instructor Roger Philips will discuss and show images of the Star Cluster Pleiades at 4 p.m. Sunday, touching on history and mythology as well as astronomy. Food and drink Food for sale will include "fry-ups," stews, chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. The name chowder seems to have originated from the French word chaudière and grilled meats. Secret House Winery will operate a wine garden, and Sam Bond's Garage will run a beer and ale area. "We're trying to create a hybrid between highland games, the Oregon Country Fair The Oregon Country Fair (OCF) is a three-day fair that takes place yearly beginning on the Friday of the second weekend in July in Veneta, Oregon, approximately 15 miles west of Eugene, with an attendance of approximately 45,000 over the three day period, with attendance peaking and Renaissance Faires, from all the best of those things," Nic an Fhleisdeir says. "We are an educational foundation, so we do more educational and cultural activities than most - but not in a boring way."
