Business Editors

MONROVIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 2001

Ondax, Inc., (http://www.ondax.com) today announced the closing of $7.5 million in series A financing led by Mellon Ventures, Inc. Additional investors include Alcatel Ventures, Corning Innovation Ventures, a division of Corning Incorporated Corning Incorporated NYSE: GLW is an American manufacturer of glass, ceramics and related materials, primarily for industrial and scientific applications. The company was known until 1989 as Corning Glass Works. , Gabriel Venture Partners and AM Venture Partners.

Headquartered in Monrovia, Calif., Ondax develops and manufactures all-optical advanced Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing In fibre-optic communications, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a technology which multiplexes multiple optical carrier signals on a single optical fibre by using different wavelengths (colours) of laser light to carry different signals.  (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

As its first product line, Ondax will introduce the Fasma series, which features all-optical tunable add-drop filters. Such filters are key components for dynamic provisioning and wavelength routing in next generation DWDM networks. Ondax will demonstrate the first product of the Fasma series at the Optical Fiber Conference in Anaheim, Calif., March 19-21, 2001.

"We believe that wavelength flexibility is a key ingredient in future optical networks. The technology being developed by Ondax is aimed at being among the first to provide practical and functional tunable filters to create that flexibility," said Greg Smith, President, Corning Innovation Ventures.

The filter used in the Fasma series has low insertion loss and is tunable over 41 channels spaced by 100 GHz. Later in the year, Ondax plans to expand the Fasma series to offer beta-test units featuring hitless tuning, the ability to tune to specific channels without affecting the remaining traffic passing through the device. The family of FASMA products will include 50 GHz and 25 GHz filters.

Ondax offers new solutions for the telecommunications marketplace by commercializing optical technologies developed at the California Institute of Technology and the Universities of Bonn and Osnabruck in Germany.
