Boy, have we got a bad case of the twos this week.

Two classic comedies, two obscure movies, two nights of hip-hop, two dissimilar bands with similar names, two nights of Southern rock. The buzz you hear is not the happy sound a bumblebee makes after drinking an imperial pint of mead.

But there's no reason to slip into full grumblebee mode just because it's Memorial Day weekend and it's as quiet as a graveyard. Next weekend there will be almost too much to do around here. It evens out.

Here are some options, two by two.

War is not funny, and newlywed life in a fifth-floor walk-up is no picnic, but "Mr. Roberts" and "Barefoot in the Park" have provided plenty of laughs over the years. The World War II shipboard comedy at Actors Cabaret and the Neil Simon comedy at the Very Little Theatre both open tonight.

While the multiplexes offer a choice between high-tech animation (`Shrek 2') and high-tech disaster (`The Day After Tomorrow'), the Bijou Art Cinemas will stick with the offbeat, opening "Broken Wings," an Israeli family drama, and "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring," a "coming of age and wisdom tale" about Buddhist monks in Korea.

Hip-hop fans can stay up late two nights in a row, for a McDonald Theatre concert tonight featuring Andre Nickatina, and Saturday for a Better Than You battle among 16 MCs at the WOW Hall on Saturday night. Southern rock fans can catch members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot in an all-star configuration at Legends tonight and Saturday.

Azuquita and Rasputina may sound like sisters from a Grimm fairy tale, but they're two very different outfits. Rasputina will play cello rock and sing oddly compelling songs at the WOW Hall tonight. Azuquita will play son and other Cuban music in the Shedd Chapel on Tuesday.
