On drug plans, seniors have studying to do.

Byline: GUEST VIEWPOINT By Jim Torrey For The Register-Guard

For most citizens of a certain age, homework is a thing of the distant past. But by doing a little research in a timely manner, Lane County's Medicare Medicare, national health insurance program in the United States for persons aged 65 and over and the disabled. It was established in 1965 with passage of the Social Security Amendments and is now run by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  recipients could save a bundle on the cost of prescription drugs prescription drug Prescription medication Pharmacology An FDA-approved drug which must, by federal law or regulation, be dispensed only pursuant to a prescription–eg, finished dose form and active ingredients subject to the provisos of the Federal Food, Drug, .

As a result of strong competition, Oregon's Medicare recipients can select from a wide array of options, choosing a prescription drug plan that addresses their individual concerns about cost, coverage and convenience. Some of the options even cost less and provide coverage that goes beyond Medicare's standard benefit.

If you're a Medicare recipient like me, here are a few things you can do to get the best fit from a prescription benefit plan:

Gather information about your current coverage for health care and prescription drugs. Make sure you know what coverage you now have.

Make a list of the drugs you currently use, including their names and dosages. Think about other things that matter to you about coverage, such as whether you want more protection if your prescription needs change, or whether you want coverage that has a lower premium. This will help you compare plans later.

Apply for extra financial help through the Social Security Administration if you think you might qualify.

Ask your preferred pharmacy pharmacy, art of compounding and dispensing drugs and medication. The term is also applied to an establishment used for such purposes.
