Benedict is the regnal name of the current Roman pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI (2005–present) and has been the name of fourteen other popes (and three antipopes):
  • Pope Benedict I (575–579)
 urged the Irish bishops to help their people recognize the inability of the "secular, materialist culture" to bring them true joy. And he encouraged them to "establish the truth" behind the clerical sex abuse scandals in Ireland. He challenged the prelates to be leaders of their flock and help them view changes in society with discernment through sound catechesis cat·e·che·sis
