On being a Foundation Fellow. (MTNA: Foundation news).

I am writing these few paragraphs to demonstrate my support for the FOUNDATION's many commendable endeavors and the concept of FOUNDATION Fellow recognition.

Complete and total surprise! That was my reaction at being named a FOUNDATION Fellow last March at the 2001 MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association
MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee)
National Convention in Washington, D.C. My last-minute rush from the airport to the banquet certainly added to the drama. There were jokes and smiles from people at my table. "You finally decided to show up?" The waitress graciously served my food even though everyone else was finished.

Wolfing down dinner, I wasn't paying full attention to the announcements. Halfway through dessert my name was called, and I honestly thought a mistake had been made--perhaps I was "hearing things." But the fact was that former students had made a decision to honor me by making contributions to the FOUNDATION Fellow program. I was so proud to be on that stage! Not proud of my few accomplishments, but of the support of such fantastic teacher-musicians who remain devoted to their students and to MTNA, and who continue to enrich the lives of young people on a daily basis.

This experience affected me profoundly. My response has been to establish a new MTNA FOUNDATION endowment. Dr. Gary L. Ingle in·gle

There are many MTNA old-timers more deserving of recognition than I--folks who have given continuously of their energy, time and talent to national, state and local projects. I would urge their friends and former students to consider surprising those individuals with a FOUNDATION Fellow recognition at the next National Conference. They might even arrive at the banquet on time!
