Omron Healthcare, Tohoku University Jointly Surveyed 10,000 People on Blood Pressure Measurement.

Tokyo, Japan, Sept 14, 2005 - (JCNN) - Omron Healthcare announced on September 13 the results of its latest attitude survey on blood pressure measurement. In collaboration with Tohoku University, the company surveyed a total of 10,000 general outpatients who visited 138 dispensing pharmacies nationwide from April to August.

The age group varied from 20s to 90s. Only 1.1% of the respondents know precisely the reference value to determine high blood pressure (135mmHg for systolic blood pressure and 85mmHg for diastolic blood pressure) in home blood pressure monitoring.

Further, 39% of the respondents who are currently suffering from hypertension do not report the results of home blood pressure monitoring to their doctors. Meanwhile, 38.1% of the respondents who consult a doctor for high blood pressure are recommended to measure blood pressure at home.

Of the respondents, 28.8% answered that they know morning hypertension. Further, one in every four respondents said that they have heard of the terms that indicate specific types of hypertension such as masked hypertension, white coat hypertension and postural hypotension.

Details of the survey will be presented at the 28th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Society of Hypertension to be held in Hokkaido from September 15 to 17.
