this week. Omnis Studio is a 4GL Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool that currently operates under Mac OS (7.5 and higher), Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and Linux. Omnis is planning to release a new version of Studio (3.0) in early autumn 2000, followed by an upgrade shortly after Apple releases Mac OSX.

Apple has invited Omnis Software to be one of only four presenters at the Apple Hands-on Theater at the Macworld Expo. At this venue, Omnis will introduce show attendees to the power of Omnis Studio as a development tool. Theater participants will have the opportunity to build a custom, fully functional Web application in less than 50 minutes.

Jerry Lipscomb, Omnis chief evangelist, who will be making the demonstrations, said, "We're delighted to have this opportunity to demonstrate the power of the Omnis technology. We have been committed to the Apple platform since before the Mac -- the first version of Omnis appeared on Apple II -- and we have supported business application development in the Mac environment ever since. We believe that OSX, with its stable and proven Mach kernel A Unix-like operating system developed at Carnegie-Mellon University in the period between 1985 and 1994. It was designed with a microkernel architecture that makes it easily portable to different platforms. Operating systems based on Mach include NextStep, OSF/1 and Mac OS X. , will make the Mac a serious contender in the business market, and we intend to do everything we can to promote and encourage that success."

Lipscomb continued, "The production of an OSX version of Omnis Studio is a testament to both the power of the Omnis technology and the skill of our engineers. Many development tools are tied in tightly with a single operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
, whereas the Omnis engineering team has created a common interface layer, allowing all of the code to be written once, and the interface takes care of the calls to the individual OS. To really understand this, consider Linux. Our engineers managed a complete port in just a few months, and we launched Omnis Studio for Linux last September. Nearly a year later, we are still waiting for the appearance of Kylix. Omnis has enjoyed similarly rapid progress since work began on an OSX version of Studio earlier this year."

About Omnis Studio

Omnis Technology's flagship product A primary product of a company, which is typically why the company was founded and/or what made it well known. For example, MS-DOS, Windows and the Microsoft Office suite have been flagship products of Microsoft. CorelDRAW is a flagship product of Corel Corporation. , Omnis Studio is a high-performance visual RAD tool Any program or utility that speeds up the development and programming of an application. Visual programming tools are widely used to quickly develop graphical front ends.  that provides a component-based environment for building GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  interfaces within e-commerce, database and client/server applications. When used with the company's Web Client plug-in technology, Omnis Studio allows the development of client/server relationships over the Internet using popular web-browsers, giving fast, secure, scalable solutions in a minimum of development time. Development and deployment of Omnis Studio applications can occur simultaneously in Linux, Windows, and Mac OS environments without changing the application code. This portability is achieved because Omnis utilizes a highly optimized interpreter engine to execute the object-oriented application at runtime. Omnis Studio applications support native data access to Oracle, Sybase, DB2/UDB, Informix and ODBC-compliant data sources including MySQL. The Omnis Web Client allows the developer to create client interfaces that either utilize forms or a highly secure plug-in. Using Omnis Studio cuts application development time by as much as 75 percent compared to 3GL environments (C++, Java), while allowing the developer to use objects developed in 3GL environments as components in Omnis applications.
