Omnirel and Motorola join forces to offer Gallium Arsenide Schottky Rectifiers for military applications.

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 1996--Omnirel Corp. and Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector Tuesday announced that Omnirel has selected Motorola's Gallium Arsenide An alloy of gallium and arsenic compound (GaAs) that is used as the base material for chips. Several times faster than silicon, it is used in high frequency applications such as cellphones, DVD players and fiber optics.  (GaAs) Schottky Rectifier rectifier, component of an electric circuit used to change alternating current to direct current. Rectifiers are made in various forms, all operating on the principle that current passes through them freely in one direction but only slightly or not at all in the  technology for a new series of MIL qualified GaAs rectifiers devices.

Under the agreement, Motorola will supply GaAs Schottky wafers to Omnirel who will assemble, test, qualify and market a full line of hermitic her·mit

The unique characteristics of GaAs rectifiers are the fast reverse recovery time and low peak reverse current, resulting in low stored charge during the reverse recovery time. Unlike silicon rectifiers, this characteristic varies very little with increasing temperature, which enables operation at high frequency with minimum power loss during the reverse recovery time over a broad temperature range.

GaAs technology is ideal for military power conversion applications because allows for higher efficiency, smaller size and lighter converters operating at very high frequencies. These are attributes very desirable for military and aerospace applications.

Ron Gantar of Motorola's Power Products Division said, "Motorola has developed a leading edge power semiconductor technology that is ideally suited for the high reliability power supply and motion control market. Omnirel's choice of Motorola's advanced GaAs rectifier technology enables us to offer the Military and Aerospace markets a competitive edge."

John Catrambone, Omnirel's president, added, "Combining Motorola's GaAs technology with Omnirel's high density packaging, manufacturing and test capability will provide the 'hi-rel' markets with the latest high efficiency rectifiers as full MIL qualified devices."

Omnirel is a leading manufacturer of single and multi-chip semiconductors and power integrated modules servicing the Military and high performance industrial market.

With 1995 worldwide sales of $8.5 billion, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is the largest U.S.-based broad line supplier of semiconductor solutions. Motorola (NYSE NYSE
