OmniTRAX and Churchill Gateway Development Corp. have reported on the results of the companies' January business development trip to Russia on behalf of the Port of Churchill, located on the Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada. The trip was taken in close collaboration with Russia's Ambassador to Canada, Georgiy Mamedov.

Three OmniTRAX senior executives spent ten days in Russia in late January conducting meetings with private, public, and governmental-trade organizations for the purpose of identifying joint import and export opportunities between the Port of Churchill and the ports of Murmansk and St. Petersburg.

In summary, the trip helped spotlight potential trade opportunities from relatively short-term to more complex, longer-term undertakings. Russian fertilizers imported through Churchill may have potential, as may steel and other products. Russian companies also have potential interest in importing grain and agricultural machinery. In the longer term, importation of refined petroleum products through Churchill may be feasible.

According to Mike Ogborn, Managing Director of OmniTRAX, realization of any of these opportunities will require the continued private-public partnerships between OmniTRAX and the Province of Manitoba, federal government of Canada, Churchill Gateway Development Corporation (CGDC), and others.

"All these possible Russian trade opportunities are accompanied by significant logistical and market challenges, including the possibility of investment in new types of facilities at Churchill in order to handle the specific needs of the individual commodities," states Mr. Ogborn. "This Russia trip was invaluable in allowing a realistic assessment of possible opportunity matched with the hurdles that must be overcome to bring them to reality. As a team, we have a great deal of investigation and hard work ahead of us. We never expected it would be easy."

Mr. Ogborn says OmniTRAX and CGDC undertook this mission to Russia because of their commitment to do everything possible to make the Port of Churchill viable and a resource for economic growth and benefit to Manitoba and Canada. "Cargo diversification is crucial to the long-term future of Churchill," says Mr. Ogborn. "Russia and the Ports of St. Petersburg and Murmansk represent huge potential for Churchill."

The ports of Murmansk and St. Petersburg and Churchill are linked by the concept of the "Arctic Bridge" because the distance between Churchill and the Russian ports is much shorter than other routes, providing for potentially compelling cost savings.

Outlining the Russia trip, Mr. Ogborn explains OmniTRAX met in St. Petersburg with the Canadian Consul General and staff and the American Consul General and staff and spotlighted several specific trade strategies the Consul would help advance within Russia. In addition, meetings were conducted with the Seaport of St. Petersburg, major shippers, ship companies, and important maritime agencies and organizations.

OmniTRAX executives next traveled to Murmansk for facility tours and met with seaport officials, private companies, and a number of public and private business development agencies.
