Calendars and Address Books From Any Web Site

At Spring Internet World today, WeSync.com launched the next version of WeSync Personal adding support for three market-leading handheld modems, as well as the beta version A pre-shipping release of hardware or software that has gone through alpha test. A beta version of software is supposed to be very close to the final product, but, in practice, it is more a way of getting users to test the software in the first place under real conditions.  of a new tool that allows users to publish dynamic calendars and address books from any Web site to other's handhelds and uses WeSync's Web-based sync technology to maintain the accuracy of that data on subscriber handhelds automatically.

The company's free flagship service gives handheld users the ability to "subscribe" to living information on other users' devices, and maintains the accuracy of that information by communicating changes to shared information between disparate devices with every sync.

," said Neil Rhodes, co-author of Palm Programming: The Developer's Guide. After a brief download and an initial setup, Rhodes was able to view a duplicate of his wife's calendar alongside his own schedule, right on his device. The service automatically communicates changes to the shared information on each device every time one member of the couple performs a sync operation. "This is the killer ap, for me, and I think for other Palm users as well."

There are no extra sync steps for users, and therefore minimal learning curve. Sharing privileges and setup are easily managed through private, secure online communities hosted at the WeSync web site.

Additionally, on the handheld device itself, the service includes a number of extensions to already familiar applications like the Palm(TM) Date Book to simplify the managing of shared information and multiple calendars.

As an added benefit, WeSync users also have access to a growing collection of publicly available calendars and address books that are available for easy download and kept automatically accurate through the service.

Current examples include trade show calendars, sports schedules and airline 800 numbers. Coming additions will include financial information and a number of other business resources from partnerships with third party content specialists in those areas.

Users Sync Without Desktop with Modem/Wireless Refresh(TM)

The original version of WeSync Personal, available free from the company's Web site, included the company's Wireless Refresh(TM) technology. The highly anticipated feature, previewed at Comdex in November, lets users of the Palm VII The Palm VII product family consisted of two products, the Palm VII and the Palm VIIx Palm Pilots. These were produced by Palm, Inc., before it was split into PalmOne and PalmSource. They had antennas for wireless data communication on the Mobitex network under the now defunct Palm. (TM) connected organizer sync their personal and shared calendar information wirelessly while away from their desktop.

With version 1.2, WeSync has added support for the OmniSky Minstrel V wireless modem A modem and antenna that transmits and receives over the air. Wireless modems support several technologies, including 802.11, Bluetooth, CDPD, DataTAC, Mobitex and Ricochet. There are wireless modems for laptops, handhelds and cellphones. , PalmModem(R) Accessory and Handspring hand·spring

Using the Modem Refresh(TM) feature now, non-Palm VII(TM) WeSync users can also refresh their data effectively while away from their desktop.

To date, there have been numerous obstacles to non-desktop synchronization, including bandwidth costs, speed and the device processing power. Both Refresh technologies let users perform efficient narrow bandwidth synchronizations by defining limited ranges of data to sync, or "refresh." The functionality was specifically developed to let device users keep their information current while away from the desktop without overtaxing their devices' processing capabilities, or incurring large connection fees.

Also included in the new version of the solution is the beta version of a new tool, code-named "Push to my Handheld," which will allow users big and small to publish always-accurate, dynamic calendar and address book information from any Web site to others' handhelds.

Using WeSync, users can subscribe to Verb 1. subscribe to - receive or obtain regularly; "We take the Times every day"

"WeSync 1.0 users have been highly imaginative in their desire to use the solution to share information in ways we never even imagined," said WeSync President Pete Grillo. "The new 'Push to My Handheld' tool was our answer both the hundreds of users who wanted to publish church schedules, PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  meetings, school contact lists and more from their personal Web sites, and to our larger content partners who wish to utilize this technology to push out always-accurate customer contacts, trade show schedules, broadcast schedules and more to customer handheld devices."

The process is simple. Users start by sharing an individual contact list or calendar in the ordinary way through WeSync, however instead of placing that shared information in a community, the system allows the user to wrap that now-shareable resource in a snippet A small amount of something.
