Olympus announces lowest cost CD-R; Internal CD-R breaks price barrier.


MELVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 1996--Olympus Image Systems Inc. announced today the Olympus CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. 2 Internal CD-Recordable drive. The CD-R2 is a highly-reliable double speed multi-session CD-recordable drive that supports Windows, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

The Olympus CD-R2 is the preferred choice for audio recording, archiving, and multimedia development. The Olympus CD-R2 breaks the CD-recordable price barrier, with the lowest priced CD-R available on the market for only $899. It includes Gear mastering software from Elektroson (supports ISO- iso- or is-

The CDS615E mechanism, upon which the CD-RD2 is based, supports all the popular formats: CD-DA (Compact Disc-Digital Audio) The original compact disc format developed by Sony and Philips in the 1980s, which was designed for audio only. Reading and writing CDs at twice the normal speed, the CD-R2 is well matched to the needs and computer equipment of the CD-ROM developer. It includes a 1 MB cache that helps even the typical computer user to create powerful CD-ROMs.

The CD-R2 is available for an expected $899 street price through all Olympus resellers, including MicroWarehouse, CDW CDW - data warehouse , PC/Mac Connection, PrePress Direct and others; and distributors, including Ingram Micro, Tech Data, Optical Laser, Datalink, and others. Olympus extends a one-year warranty. VAR pricing is also available.

The CD-R2 is also available in an external version with high-end Gear Multimedia Mastering software at $1199 (Mac) $1299 (PC) street price. The software supports all professional recording standards (including CD-DA, CD-Plus, CD-ROM, CD-ROM mixed mode, CD-I, CD-V CD-V Compact Disk - Video , and photo CD).
