Olympus announces easy to use CD-R2x6.

Olympus America Inc. Digital & Imaging Systems Group announced today the Olympus CD-R2x6, two speed CD-Recorder/six speed CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

The multi-session CD-R2x6 joins the family of Olympus' award-winning optical storage products including the Olympus CD-R2x4, PC Today's "Best Buy," November 1996 and the CD-R2, winner of Digital Video Magazine's CD-Recorder round-up May 1996. Olympus is the first major brand to break the $500 price barrier for a CD-Recordable system, and continues to lead the market in cost, performance and reliability.

With the CD-R2x6's six-speed capability, reading a CD is 50% faster than the past generation. Its six-speed ability also allows for quick playback of graphics intensive material with seamless transitions. The CD-R2x6 is the quickest CD-R in its class, with less than a 200 msec seek time.

The CD-R2x6/INT-WIN ships in a retail-ready package and will be available through major computer resellers. It is an internal model designed for Windows users with an available 5 1/4" removable storage bay in their tower PC and is priced at $499.

An external, MacOS model, the CD R-2x6/Mac is available for $649. This model includes Astarte's award-winning Toast software. Toast Software, the perennial class leader for Mac CD software, offers some outstanding features, including the ability to create bootable MacOS CD-ROMs. Users can also create Audio CDs with a few simple clicks of the mouse. Support for Video CDs allows fast and easy creation of multimedia content for distribution. The CD-R2x6/MAC is a great solution for storing large numbers of digital and scanned images. The Olympus recorder can also change pre-gap information when recording in Track-at-Once mode, an industry first. The CD-R2x6/Mac includes usability features such as SCSI diagnostic LED, SCSI terminator and cable, stereo audio out jacks, and audio ground connector.

The new products described above are priced at a leadership position. The prices are genuine -- they do not require consumers to deal with aggravating rebates which may be the case with competing products.

As a promotion, Olympus is including five free pieces of media with all three CD-R2x6 models it ships through March 31, 1997. All five pieces of media are included in the box so there are no complicated rebate or coupon offers for either the retailer or the end user. Olympus extends a one-year warranty on all three models.
