Olympus adds Windows 95 & NT support to its CD-recordable; users can migrate from 16-bit to high performance 32-bit software.

MELVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1995--Olympus Image Systems Inc. will announce at COMDEX The former, premier computer trade show in the U.S. Although it grew into an end user event, it was originally created for dealers and distributors (it was the COMputer Dealers EXposition).  that its CD recordable (CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. ) subsystem for its CD-R2/ISA has been upgraded to support both Windows 95 and Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  featuring 32-bit native recording software.

The feature-rich CD-R subsystem -- designed to create CDs for content archival, software distribution, multimedia development and print-on-demand applications -- provides multi-session recording capabilities and incorporates 1 MB data cache memory.

The Olympus subsystem solution includes Gear Multimedia v3.2 software from Elektroson. The 32-bit Gear recording software offers Window users enhanced caching and extended memory management to support data transfer rates, including virtual image writing. The optimized directory and file structure handling will permit CD-R users, under Windows 95 and Windows NT, to create 30 character directories and file names. The software also allows logical formatting up to ISO (1) See ISO speed.

Olympus Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Bill Boles, "Support for Windows 95 and NT on the Olympus CD recordable product line allows two important categories of users access to superb CD technology. NT users can archive their files to CDs and test pre-mastered CDs in-house. These are important capabilities since many software developers run NT in their engineering departments. As for the addition of Windows 95 support, the featured 32-bit native recording software is most important to the rapidly growing WIN 95 installed base. This bundling meets growing market requirements, particularly in niche markets including medical imaging, legal, visual communications, training and customized audio-video. Our outstanding price/performance ratio In economics and engineering, the price/performance ratio refers to a product's ability to deliver performance, of any sort, for its price. For instance, if you have a whole day to travel 100 km, spending $50 to do the journey in two hours is a better price/performance ratio than  and new performance options will be popular in these dynamic markets."

The CD-R2/ISA with 32-bit Windows 95 and Windows NT support is scheduled to ship by January 1996 at the expected street price of $1,389. Current users of the CD-R2/ISA with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 16-bit support, will be provided upgrade options from Elektroson.
