Olympus Announces CD-R2x4; Makes CD-ROMs as Easy To Record as Floppy Disks.MELVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1996--Olympus Image Systems, Inc. announced today the Olympus CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. 2x4, dual speed CD-Recorder/quad-speed CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc. CD-ROM in full compact disc read-only memory Type of computer storage medium that is read optically (e.g., by a laser). Player. Based upon Olympus' new CDS620E CD-Recorder mechanism, the CD-R2x4 is a multi-session CD-Recorder bundled with Corel's CD-Creator Software, which includes the revolutionary CD-RFS CD-RFS Compact Disc - Recordable Filing System , or CD Recordable File System, created by Sony. The CD-R2x4 joins the family of Olympus' award-winning storage products, and follows the dual speed CD-R2 Recorder, winner of Digital Video Magazine's Round-up of CD-R Drives, May 1996. The new CD-R2x4 continues this winning tradition, with a reliable, economical 2X CD-Recorder, 4X CD-ROM player for only $799 for an internal 5.25" drive bay configuration. With the CD-R2x4's quad-speed reading capability, copying of recorded material from a CD takes half the time of 2X models. Quad-speed also allows for quick playback of graphics intensive material with seamless transitions. The CD-R2x4 is the quickest CD-R in its class, with less than a 160 msec seek time. This performance is well complemented by a large 1 MB buffer minimizing a condition known as "buffer under-run," which is more common in earlier generation CD-Recorders. "On the day our first Olympus CD-R arrived, it was subjected to 36 straight hours of use and recorded 125 CD-Rs consecutively, flawlessly," said Olympus CD-R user Lance Smith, President, Victoria Theodore Software Engineering Co. "We now own three Olympus CD-Rs and have recorded over 2,000 CDs using all of the varying brands of CD-R media in the market. The Olympus CD-R is a workhorse machine." Using the Windows 95 Explorer's drag and drop A graphical user interface (GUI) capability that lets you perform operations by moving the icon of an object with the mouse into another window or onto another icon. For example, files can be copied or moved by dragging them from one folder to another. capability, CD-RFS allows users to write directly to a CD-R disc as if it were a floppy or any other storage device. In addition, users may save files from any application directly to a CD-R. No additional mastering software is necessary for storage and archiving of data. The chance of buffer under-run is eliminated, meaning no more ruined CD-R discs. The CD-R2x4 will open up new possibilities in CD storage and usability. The cooperation between Corel, Sony, and Olympus will help make CD-RFS the de-facto incremental packet writing standard. CD-RFS takes advantage of the Olympus CD-R2x4 subsystem's support of incremental packet writing. "The CD-R2x4 is the next logical evolution in our product line," noted Bill Boles, VP of Sales and Marketing, Olympus Image Systems, Inc. "With the addition of CD-RFS, we believe we have one of the most user-friendly mass storage devices available today. With media priced under $10 and an installed base of greater than 100 Million CD players, CD-R is poised to become the preferred home and small business archival solution." The included Corel CD-Creator utilizes Windows 95-type Wizards to write CD-ROMs with relative ease by walking the user through step-by-step. The Olympus drive mechanism supports all popular multimedia formats: CD-DA (Compact Disc-Digital Audio) The original compact disc format developed by Sony and Philips in the 1980s, which was designed for audio only. Since "CD" is used loosely for all Compact Disc formats, the CD-DA designation differentiates a music disc or player (Audio), CD-Plus (Enhanced CD), CD-ROM (Data), CD-ROM mixed mode (Games/Multimedia), CD-I (Compact Disc-Interactive) A compact disc format developed by Philips and Sony that held text, audio and animated graphics. It required a CD-I player that contained its own operating system. (Interactive), Photo CD and Video CD. It is also in conformance with all major recording standards, such as Disc-at-Once, Track-at-Once, multisession A compact disc capability in which data are recorded in more than one session. Each subsequent recording session can be linked to the previous so that they all appear as one. Each session adds overhead on the disc, because lead-in and lead-out sectors must be recorded each time, which , fixed packet and variable packet writing. The CD-R2x4/INT-WIN internal model includes Corel CD-Creator Software, CD-RFS, one blank disc, caddy A plastic container that holds a CD or DVD disc for added protection. The bare disc is placed in the caddy, and the caddy is inserted into the drive. A caddy is not a jewel case. A jewel case protects the disc for transportation. A caddy protects the disc while reading and writing. and mounting hardware. The CD-R2x4/SCSI is available as an external model for $999. The external model supports Macintosh, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT. The external model also includes a rugged metal case, SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. diagnostic LED, stereo audio out jacks, and a SCSI Cable. Olympus extends a one-year warranty for both products.
