Olympic Champion Michael Johnson Teams with Fitness Legend Dr. Kenneth Cooper to Build World-Class Athletic Performance Training and Research Center in Texas.
MCKINNEY, Texas, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Five-time Olympic gold medalist and world's fastest man Michael Johnson will team with Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H. to create the state's first Olympic-caliber athletic training and sports science center at Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, north of Dallas. An extension of Johnson's international athletic performance and training consultancy for professional athletes, the Michael Johnson Performance Training Center at Craig Ranch is his first "bricks-and-mortar" training center and will become an international destination for elite athletes from around the world seeking expert training to perform their best.
In conjunction with Johnson's world-class training center, Dr. Cooper has announced plans to build The Cooper Institute for Sports Medicine Research. The Institute stands to be among the finest exercise physiology testing and research facilities in the world aimed toward testing and improving athletic performance. This strategic collaboration between The Cooper Institute for Sports Medicine Research and the Michael Johnson Performance Training Center will bring to North Texas an athletic training, exercise physiology research and sports medicine complex modeled after the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the Australian Institute of Sport, which represent the finest models in the world.
In addition to attracting international elite athletes, the Michael Johnson Performance Training Center also will serve North Texas youth and recreational athletes from the McKinney, Frisco, Plano, Allen and North Dallas areas. Estimated completion of the 23,000-square-foot training center is scheduled for early 2007.
"It's an honor to return home to Texas and take the next step in achieving my dream of building a truly Olympic-caliber athletic performance training center designed for aspiring and elite athletes from around the world," said Michael Johnson, president and CEO, Michael Johnson Performance, Inc. "While this training center is about much more than just track and field, we plan to make our track stadium the top destination for youth track and field development in the country. We also plan to host major elite professional track and field events that will help revitalize interest in the sport on a national level, which has long been in decline."
The Michael Johnson Performance Training Center will be equipped with the most state-of-the-art training equipment available and feature an 8-lane, 400- meter, 4,000-seat rubberized outdoor track stadium with grass infield. The center also will feature a full-court basketball gym, 60-yard indoor track, strength training areas, and a physical therapy center. Additionally, the facility is located adjacent to The Cooper Institute for Sports Medicine Research, an Olympic-size, 50-meter swimming pool, and championship baseball, softball and soccer facilities. The outdoor track will be developed through a public-private partnership between the City of McKinney and real estate developer Wellstone Communities.
"By building our training center in collaboration with the Cooper Institute, we're effectively transforming Dallas/Fort Worth into an epicenter for athletic performance training and sports science," said Johnson. "Because of our team's international reputation and proven results, some of the biggest names in sports soon will be training at our facility in McKinney. We're already coordinating with international Olympic governing agencies to train their Olympic hopefuls at Craig Ranch."
Athletes of all ages and skill levels will have access to the same customized approach to achieving athletic excellence as many of today's best- known professional athletes who have been trained by Johnson and his staff. A partial roster of Michael Johnson Performance clients past and present include Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner, the Chinese Athletics Federation, Nike, the Australian Athletics Federation, the South African Olympic Committee, among others. Johnson also has trained many well-known professional athletes in the past, including the Dallas Cowboys' Roy Williams and the New York Giants' Eli Manning.
