In conjunction with Johnson's world-class training center, Dr. Cooper has announced plans to build The Cooper Institute for Sports Medicine sports medicine, branch of medicine concerned with physical fitness and with the treatment and prevention of injuries and other disorders related to sports. The Institute stands to be among the finest exercise physiology testing and research facilities in the world aimed toward testing and improving athletic performance. This strategic collaboration between The Cooper Institute for Sports Medicine Research and the Michael Johnson Performance Training Center will bring to North Texas an athletic training, exercise physiology research and sports medicine complex modeled after the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the Australian Institute of Sport, which represent the finest models in the world.

The Michael Johnson Performance Training Center will be equipped with the most state-of-the-art training equipment available and feature an 8-lane, 400- meter, 4,000-seat rubberized outdoor track stadium with grass infield. The center also will feature a full-court basketball gym, 60-yard indoor track, strength training areas, and a physical therapy center. Additionally, the facility is located adjacent to The Cooper Institute for Sports Medicine Research, an Olympic-size, 50-meter swimming pool, and championship baseball, softball and soccer facilities. The outdoor track will be developed through a public-private partnership between the City of McKinney and real estate developer Wellstone Communities.
