When Olivia learns that there will not be a band performing, she sets out to put together her own "one pig" marching band using an unusual collection of items and instruments found around the house. This is a great story for young children about the excitement of music and using creativity. This story is not about traditional music lessons or a composer's life, but it truly does give a fantastic picture of using one's own mind and resources to create music from within. The author, Ian Falconer, definitely has a sense of what the day in the life of a young child is like, and how their mind works, from distraction to distraction. He sets a delightful picture of the interaction of this young pig and her mother throughout the story. This book is a part of a best-selling series of stories about Olivia that has received rave reviews from USA Today USA Today National U.S. daily general-interest newspaper, the first of its kind. Launched in 1982 by Allen Neuharth, head of the Gannett newspaper chain, it reached a circulation of one million within a year and surpassed two million in the 1990s. , Publishers Weekly and the New York Times Book Review. The book is illustrated with basic black and white drawings that are strategically highlighted with the use of brilliant blue and red, creating a background that is interesting to view with a hint of patriotism. When Olivia imagines the band, her thoughts are in full color photographs. There is a wonderful fold out page in the middle of the book that shows Olivia's imagination of her own band participation, as well as a beautiful change of coloring for the sunset and fireworks display. This would be an excellent choice for summer reading.--Reviewed by Rebekah Jones, Bogart, Georgia * The items marked with this symbol can be ordered via the MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee) website through our affiliation with Amazon.com.
