Old union's new high-tech message.

Though it's one of New York's oldest unions, organized more than a century ago, in 1897, Local 46 of the Metallic Lathers & Reinforcing Ironworkers Union is very much abreast of new technology.

Local 46 is using streaming-audio spots to get its message to the younger generation who may be tomorrow's union members.

Delivered on the Internet at www.1010wins.com, the digital-audio Webcasts also promote the benefits of lath-and-plaster and reinforced-concrete construction methods to builders, developers and the general public in the construction industry.

At least 15 streaming-audio spots, each 60 seconds long, are Webcast every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Half of the alloted time is devoted to headlines from Workers' Independent News, a nationally syndicated news organization that focuses on labor issues and "puts people over profits." The other 30 seconds delivers a Local 46 perspective.

"For months, Local 46 has been broadcasting 60-second spots on 1010 WINS Radio to inform commuters of the benefits of union labor providing genuine lath and plaster Noun 1. lath and plaster - a building material consisting of thin strips of wood that provide a foundation for a coat of plaster

The station's streaming-audio upstart can't claim as many listeners as 1010 WINS Radio, which enjoys a huge weekly audience of 2.4 million people. Still, its popularity is growing rapidly and topped 300,000 listeners a week in September, with the average Web listener spending nearly two hours online, according to according to
