Nigerian vice president Atiku Abubakar said on 14 August 2001 that 4,647 oil spills, involving 2.4 million barrels of oil, had occurred in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria between 1976 and 1996. Abubakar spoke at a conference where he announced plans to direct multinational oil companies in Nigeria to provide reports to the government on the state of their pipelines and on their programs for pollution control.
