Ohio's Annual Bioscience Conference, October 21-22; BioOhio 2004 to Focus on Entrepreneurism, Funding, and State-Supported Commercialization Efforts.


COLUMBUS, Ohio Columbus is the capital and the largest city of the American state of Ohio. Named for explorer Christopher Columbus, the city was founded in 1812 at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, and assumed the functions of state capital in 1816.  -- Omeris will host Ohio's only annual bioscience conference on October 21-22 at the Hilton Columbus. BioOhio 2004: Entrepreneurs & Innovation will feature two of the nation's premier cancer researchers, both of whom also have succeeded as bioscience entrepreneurs.

During Friday morning's plenary address, BioOhio attendees will be introduced to physician-researcher Carlo Croce, MD. The Ohio State University Ohio State University, main campus at Columbus; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1870, opened 1873 as Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, renamed 1878. There are also campuses at Lima, Mansfield, Marion, and Newark.  recently recruited Dr. Croce from Philadelphia to direct their nationally-recognized Human Cancer Genetics Program. Based on his research discoveries, Dr. Croce launched several small biotech companies, including one that Johnson & Johnson purchased.

In addition to Dr. Day's keynote address on Thursday, the agenda includes Governor Bob Taft Robert Alphonso "Bob" Taft II (born January 8, 1942) is an American Republican politician. He was elected to two terms of office as the Governor of the U.S. state of Ohio between 1999-2007. Taft started work for the University of Dayton beginning August 15 2007.  as well as the Ohio BioEntrepreneur Successes Panel, which includes the founders of Diagnostic Hybrids, Athersys, AtriCure, Clinical Research Management, and Ganeden Biotech.

The BioOhio 2004 anchor session on Friday afternoon is the Women BioEntrepreneur Panel, featuring some of Ohio's most influential female bioscience professionals such as BIO/START's Carol Frankenstein and Barbara Fant, founder of the Integrated Center for Device Development.
