Late one evening, Officer Thomas Cullen of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Johnstown is a city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States, 60 miles east of Pittsburgh and 46 miles (76.6 km) west-south west of Altoona, Pennsylvania. The population was 27,906 at the 2000 census. , Police Department responded to a call of a vehicle stranded in a river. Officers located the vehicle, but they could not find the driver or any passengers. Rescue workers began a hurried hur·ried

 search for any occupants as the air temperature that night hovered around 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Officer Cullen located the driver, the lone occupant occupant n. 1) someone living in a residence or using premises, as a tenant or owner. 2) a person who takes possession of real property or a thing which has no known owner, intending to gain ownership. (See: occupancy) , lying in the icy waters about 150 yards south of the vehicle. Cold water rescue personnel then were able to retrieve the driver. Emergency room physicians advised that if the driver had been in the water for another 5 minutes, he would have succumbed to hypothermia hypothermia

Abnormally low body temperature, with slowing of physiological activity. It is artificially induced (usually with ice baths) for certain surgical procedures and cancer treatments.
. The body temperature of the driver, upon arrival at the hospital, was 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Officer Cullen's courageous actions undoubtedly saved the driver's life.
